After Christian forces were defeated in the Middle East, the order moved from Jerusalem to Europe. Temporary residence of the Great Master was established in Venice. The Malbork stronghold was built after conquest of Old Prussia. The upper stronghold began to be built around 1280.
The Malbork Castle consists upper, middle and low castle. The upper castle is the oldest and here was the seat of the convent. Moreover the upper castle housed a main 66 high tower-belfry and the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
